“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
A city without walls is vulnerable to attacks and pillaging. Ironically, self-control does not come from oneself. The Holy Spirit helps us to establish boundaries. With no limits, anything can come and go or take up residence without permission. A boundary is like one of those fancy remote-controlled gates. The owner can see who is trying to enter the property and decide whether to grant them entry. When we allow the enemy to fool us with his disguises, we open the door to spiritual attacks.
For example, one day, Sarah told a little fib to get out of attending a boring function. She started to rely on falsehoods to avoid “hurting someone’s feelings.” Eventually, she started lying to her family and friends in the same way. Had she asked the Holy Spirit for self-control in the first place, she would not have fallen into lying. This example is just one of the many ways the devil can trick God’s people into letting down their walls. If there is a crack in the window, the devil will shimmy through it and steal all of your peace.
Thankfully, the Lord allows us to repent and take back that ground that we signed over by rebuking the devil and asking Jesus to dwell in those areas. What (or who) are you allowing?
"SELF-CONTROL DOESN'T COME FROM ONESELF. THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US ESTABLISH BOUNDARIES."
LORD,thank you for giving me discernment and self-control. Please help me keep my mind stayed on your word. Father, forgive me for providing ground in my heart to Satan. I rebuke the enemy right now in the name of Jesus and give you back all that he tried to take. You are my fortress and strong tower.
