“Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.”
Following Jesus isn’t easy, but it’s simple. At Vacation Bible School, I remember singing and dancing to the song, “This Little Light of Mine.” Aside from its catchy tune, the song was always so silly to me because no sane person would light a candle only to snuff it out by covering it up! That would be such a waste of materials.
Do we feel silly when the temptation to be shy about our faith sneaks upon us? I’ve been readingI Dared to Call Him Father, and author Bilquis Sheikh mentions her encounters with “dinner-party Christians.” After a radical conversion to Christianity, the author recounts attending parties with people who were known to be Christians. These people were timid about their faith and hesitated to speak about it even when it would have been a natural part of the conversation. Is it so uncomfortable to be authentic about our love for Jesus that we keep His light hidden? Now that isn’t just silly; it’s selfish.
"FOLLOWING JESUS ISN'T EASY, BUT ITS SIMPLE."
LORD, you are awesome. Please forgive me for all of the times I tried to hide my relationship with you. Please give me boldness when I need it to hold onto your light before others. Holy Spirit, please burn brightly in my soul and melt away my fear with your love.
