Oppression and Honor

PROVERBS 14:31

“Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.”

Every human being is an image-bearer of God. This fact alone invokes respectful and kind treatment towards all people, especially the poor. In this verse, we recognize the contrasting consequences of oppression and honor. To oppress someone is to crush them but to honor someone is to lift them up. When we give to the poor, it shows them that they are worth someone noticing their needs and taking care of them. A person is first seen and then helped. Generosity to the poor requires humility. Charity without humility can quickly become oppression fueled by selfishness and pride.

"HOW CAN WE HONOR THE LORD BY SERVING HIS PEOPLE TODAY?"

LORD, all of the honor and glory are yours. Thank you for your generosity towards me in sending a humble savior to lift me to you. Please forgive me for not having compassion for my fellow image-bearers. Please help me to follow your instructions and rely on your Spirit to show honor to the poor. Please guide me to be more like you, Jesus, because sometimes, I’m not even sure how that looks.
