1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
This is a verse that has held me fast in times of anxiety and worry. For me, this verse was particularly handy in dealing with the temptation of people-pleasing. It can be easy to react to situations from a place of fear. This relational insecurity often leads to people saying things they don’t mean, trying to hide their feelings, and avoiding truth. In reality, if we are in Christ, we have been and will continue to be perfected in love. We don’t have to fear punishment because our sins were exchanged for Christ’s righteousness. The fear of man has no place in one who fears the LORD. The next time we feel afraid, we can recite this verse and remember to rest in the love of a trustworthy God.
"IF WE ARE IN CHRIST, WE HAVE BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE PERFECTED IN LOVE."
LORD, thank you for your love. Please forgive me for being ruled by a fear rather than fueled by your love. Help me to love recklessly without fear and to inspire others to do the same.
