Empty Sacrifice v. Full Obedience

1 CORINTHIANS 13:3

“If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.”

When Jesus went to the cross, he was motivated by his deep love for us. Without Christ and his sacrifice, we gain nothing; we would not have even been able to receive the Holy Spirit who fills us with supernatural love. There is no gain in superficial displays of holiness. The Pharisees would make a fuss about their spiritual life in public but their personal interactions were fruitless. While sacrifice is a pleasing thing to the Lord, He says that obedience is even better! Obedience requires constant submission of the flesh to the Spirit. God promises that the consequence for obedience is blessing.

"OBEDIENCE REQUIRES A CONSTANT SUBMISSION OF THE FLESH TO THE SPIRIT."

LORD, you are the fount of every blessing. Thank you for the good gifts you’ve given me. Please forgive me for trying to replace obedience with sacrifice. Jesus, I receive you afresh today. Thank you for modeling obedience to our Heavenly Father. Please convict me of fruitless areas of my life and give me the grace to walk in your Holy Spirit.
