“You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”
My mom would always tell me that “We have not because we ask not.” I used to be the absolute WORST at asking for help when I needed it. Then I would run off and complain to my mom about whatever I needed that I wasn’t getting. Another one of her favorite lines is, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.” Growing up, I felt so embarrassed by my mom’s persistence. Now, I admire her perseverance! How many times do we complain to God about things without asking Him to give us grace and wisdom to deal with it? I look at some of the requests made by Jacob, Gideon, and Hannah and marvel at how God gave them exactly what they asked for! Why does it feel like when I pray, sometimes I don’t get the answer I want? (One of God’s favorite ways to answer me is with a big, fat WAIT. He knows that it’s what I need, though!)
If only we would learn to make supplications with a heart to align ourselves with God’s will instead of imposing our will on Him. God is a good father, and He delights to provide for the needs of His kids. When we don’t get the answer we want to specific requests, it may seem discouraging. Ultimately, God knows us better than we know ourselves, and He will deal with us in a way that fulfills our greatest need: to know Him!
"WE SHOULD MAKE SUPPLICATIONS WITH A HEART ALIGNED WITH GOD'S WILL AND NOT OUR WILL."
LORD, your ways are higher than my ways, and your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Thank you for attending to my needs. Please forgive me for not turning to you to satisfy me. I’m so sorry for the times I’ve prayed without faith. Please show me how to ask for things with confidence in your goodness towards me.
