“And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.” -Luke 8:14
We are always meditating on something. Unless I focus on meditating on scripture, my meditation quickly focuses on myself.
"For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace." - Romans 8:6
It's a bizarre phenomenon, but it seems that whenever I think, "Hmm, maybe I should go read my Bible," the thought is followed by an overwhelming desire to watch a show or listen to music instead. The devil is good at diverting our attention from drawing near to God.
All too often, we succumb to distractions that keep us from spending time with God.
Eventually, we realize that we've completely given ourselves over to sensuality, which leads to a reprobate mind hardened against the Holy Spirit's gentle promptings.
Next time you feel like doing anything but spending time with God, remember that those things will choke your faith and keep you from growing.
LORD, help me to set my mind on You. When I am compelled to concern myself with worldly pursuits, draw near to me! Don't let me stray from Your presence, but fill me with Your perfect peace.
